Proposal in the Swiss Alps

January 28, 2019

During our 2 week trip to France and Switzerland, we had certain stops planned out while others we decided on the fly. One of the planned stops was in Murren. I wrote about Murren a little bit in The Beauty of Switzerland but I was feeling sick on our first attempt up the mountain so we decided to try again a day later.

I was feeling so much better that following day so we headed back up the mountain on the cable cars and walked through the beautiful town. Then we continued our journey up the mountain.

The Schilthorn

Our goal was to go see the famous Schilthorn summit, where (fun fact) the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” was filmed. Nick had been there a few times before on work trips and had been telling me for the prior few years about how amazing the view was from the Schilthorn.

When we got inside after a few gondola rides, I noticed that everything was Bond themed. Even the bathrooms…which talked to you when you flushed. Strange but intriguing.

There is also a Bond themed restaurant that actually spins 360° while you eat.

I had the 007 Burger and fries, pictured below.

Bond Burger

I am not going to lie, I was not the biggest fan of the burger. The 007 stamp was pretty neat but did not make up for the lack taste. Nick seemed to enjoy his so maybe it was just me. Thankfully I also had a salad, which was much better.

After eating and enjoying the rotating view, we decided to head outside.

The view was absolutely breathtaking. It looked just like all of the photos I had seen…only better.

I mean, it truly felt as if I was looking at a postcard. We walked out to the overlook and the view was just as breathtaking. The shadows cast over the mountains were just unreal. It all looked like something you would see in movies. Except it was reality.

We continued walking further out on the cliff where there was a path but no rails and some signs basically saying to continue walking at your own risk.

We like to live life on the edge but not the literal edge…because that would be just darned crazy. The path was wide enough that I felt safe (in all seriousness, sometimes I am a nervous nellie and sometimes I’m ballsy AF) so we continued until we found a nice sitting area. The views were simply incredible from here.

Gorgeous View of the Swiss Alps

I remember telling Nick that this was one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in my life. And that was saying a lot as we just were staying in the gorgeous town of Wengen, as I wrote about in the last post!

I literally could have just sat there looking at the beautiful view for hours. Nick fumbled with trying to set up a camera to take a selfie from a far while I watched more tourists start venturing down to the spot where we were at. It was a bummer, as we were enjoying the spot to ourselves. Nevertheless, I understood others wanting to get an awesome view, too. So we took a few more photos before walking back up to the “safer” area by the overlook.

Beautiful view of the Swiss Alps

We made our way back up to the Schilthorn and decided to go to a more secluded spot a bit below the summit to get another glimpse of the mountain.

I was just staring off into the hillside underneath some sunshine (it was a bit chilly) while Nick went closer to the edge of the railing to get a better look at the mountains.

An Epic Proposal

He told me to come over near where he was to get a better view and I, a cold Tiffany, reluctantly agreed since it truly was a stunning view. I figured that I would probably remember the view more than being cold (hindsight: I remember both but it was still so worth it.)

Nick then bent down and opened his backpack and pulled out…a bottle of Coke. He asked if I wanted any. I said, “Uh, I’m good…thanks.” I was half confused and half in a shock as he continued to dig further in his backpack and he pulled out a ring.

It was a gorgeous Halo style ring that was perfect in every way. He asked if I would marry him and spend the rest of my life with him.

I kind of stood there for a minute…just so happy and in awe of the perfect moment. He said, “Well, is that a yes?”

I said, “Yes, of course!!”

The moment was just beyond amazing and we took some pretty cool photos with the mountains in the background.

Engagement Ring Swiss Alps

We had been dating for over 3.5 years at that point and while I was expecting it at some point in the near future, it was more perfect than I could have ever imagined it. The view of the Swiss Alps in the background was just beyond spectacular. It was truly an amazing moment and made the trip the most memorable trip I’ve ever had.

Engagement Swiss Alps

After a good while, we put the ring back in the box. I mistakenly told Nick a while back that I was a size 7, not thinking much of it. Turns out a 7 was wayyyy too big so having that bad boy extremely loose while walking over grates that are hundreds of feet above ground? Probably not the best idea.

Instead of heading back down the mountain, we wanted to celebrate by doing something cool.

What is cool, you ask?

The Thrill Walk!

Yes, you read correctly. The mid-station, Birg, has a Thrill Walk as a fun attraction. As the ring was safety tucked back in Nick’s backpack, we decided to get adventurous!

Birg Overlook

First, we both walked a steel tightrope. This was so fun and it was entertaining watching others walk across it, as well. Then we went in this crazy steel tunnel!

Nick was actually pretty nervous, which was unlike him. But he did it, nevertheless, and had a blast!

Down The Mountain, We Go…

After the thrill walk adventures, we decided to head back down the mountain and catch a train back to Wengen! We were heading to Thun, Switzerland later that evening and daylight was running out.

Once we made it back down to Murren, we walked through the town and saw some beautiful flowers in Murren. They were so colorful and a cheery end to our amazing day!

We made our way to the train station and headed back toward Wengen.

This was certainly the best day out of our entire trip but we still had quite a few more days ahead of us in Thun, Bern, and Lucerne!

The epic trip continues…
